“I mostly do modern and contemporary dance,” she said. “It’s a way of showing my feelings, who I am.”

The prospect of being one of the first students to dance into the University of Houston-Victoria as a freshman got her attention when she first saw a brochure.

“I’m going to be a pioneer student for all of the rest of the generations to come,” she said.

Garcia plans to major in biology and eventually go to medical school.

“I’ve been dreaming of becoming a doctor ever since I was 7,” she said, noting she wants to be a pediatrician and help children suffering from diseases.

Along with dancing, she’s a member of the Health Occupation Students of America, an organization for students going into healthcare. Students attend conferences and competitions.
