UHV undergraduate's love of baseball leads him to university

University of Houston-Victoria undergraduate Cody Sweat knows computers, and he knows baseball.

Sweat, who lives in Wharton, works in computer-aided design for an oil company in Boling, but he spends his spare time coaching his son’s Little League Team and playing softball in a men’s league in El Campo.

He also played baseball for two years as a student at Wharton County Junior College and was a recent finalist in the UHV Jaguar Naming Contest to name new jaguar sculpture installed on the UHV campus.

“I’ve always worked well with computers,” he said. “One thing led to another, and I got an associate degree in engineering design and one in general studies from WCJC before going to work for the oil industry. But if you ask me what I really love, it’s baseball. My heart is really set on being a teacher and coaching high school baseball.”

UHV is helping Sweat get closer to his dream. He is pursuing a Bachelor’s of Applied Arts & Sciences from UHV with a concentration in leadership and enterprise studies. Sweat thinks this degree will open the right doors.

“Even though I have two associate degrees, I want to get my bachelor’s because it will give me a lot more opportunities for advancement,” he said. “I graduate in 2011, and I hope to start working toward my teaching certificate while I’m already teaching and coaching baseball.”

Sweat said he chose UHV because the online classes were convenient, and the program allowed him to transfer all his prior technical courses from WCJC.

“I saw the program online, and I called a counselor,” he said. “The next thing I knew, I was enrolled and taking classes. It was that easy, and the courses have really helped me with my management skills.”
