Lisa Barr, a business development specialist with the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center, recently became the 2009-2010 chair of the UHV Staff Council, an organization that represents the benefits-eligible staff in university matters.
“With the phenomenal officer team we have this year, Staff Council can accomplish great tasks in 2009-2010,” Barr said.
Joining Barr on the executive board will be the following new officers:
- Vice Chair – Miles Harrison, PC specialist in the Information Technology department
- Secretary – Emily Krenek, online support technician in the School of Education & Human Development
- Exempt Staff Member at Large (representing salaried employees) – Yvonne Garcia, admissions analyst in the Office of Admissions & Records
- Non-Exempt Staff Member at Large (representing hourly employees) – Lawrence Nelson, online support technician in the School of Education & Human Development.
The elected vice chair automatically becomes chair the following year. Barr replaces outgoing chair Denise Prescott, who will serve as an adviser to the council in her role as past president.
The new council will hold its first meeting at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 in Room 303 of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson.
“I want to encourage everyone to participate in the meetings,” Barr said. “We’d also like to hear from department heads to let staff know more about their departments and how they serve the university.”
Among the list of things she would like to accomplish, Barr mentioned developing a comprehensive work-from-home policy for the university.
At the Aug. 13 meeting, the council will review a possible change to its constitution to make meetings monthly instead of every other month.
The increased frequency will allow the council to get more done and give staff members more chances to become involved.
In previous years, the Staff Council helped create UHV’s popular fitness release program, which started in August, and passed a resolution in support of adding underclassmen to UHV.
As the 2009-2010 chair, Barr will represent the staff on the UHV President’s Cabinet and sit on the University System Staff Executive Council.
Staff members are encouraged to contact Barr with concerns, comments and ideas at email@example.com.
