UHV to play at home of Corpus Christi Hooks in Feb. 4 game against Texas A&M-Kingsville

The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars and Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas baseball teams will play at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi on Feb. 4, UHV announced today.

This game is the first of three scheduled against TAMUK this season and will be the first matchup between the two schools.

“Head coach Terry Puhl set the wheels in motion to get this game played at the home of the Corpus Christi Hooks,” UHV Athletic Director Ashley Walyuchow said.  “It will be a treat for our players and fans.”

Puhl said he was glad he could set up the game for his players.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to play in a first-class minor league ballpark against a very good NCAA program,” he said.  “This is also a chance to showcase our program in a new market, which could aid in future recruiting.”

All seats for the game at Whataburger Field will be general admission and cost $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

As a result of the game being played in Corpus Christi, a home game against TAMUK has been scheduled for April 22 at Riverside Stadium.  The Feb. 4 ticket included in season ticket packages will be honored at the April 22 game, Walyuchow said.

The Jaguars will open their season Jan. 30 at Riverside Stadium against Northwood University in doubleheader action.  The three-game series will conclude Jan. 31 with a 1 p.m. matinee.

Baseball season tickets are on sale at the UHV Athletics Office, Room 122 of the University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson. Reserved seats are $200. General admission season tickets are $100.  Passes for the Association of Independent Institutions 2009 Baseball Championship Tournament are also on sale.  Season ticket holders have right of first refusal, Walyuchow said.

The AII tournament offers a clear path to the national tournament for schools not affiliated with a conference within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the league in which the Jaguars baseball and softball teams play.

This spring will be the second season for UHV in the world of college athletics. The university plans to add golf in 2009 and soccer in 2010.
