UHV announces 2009 baseball schedule; season tickets also on sale

The University of Houston-Victoria announced its schedule today for the 2009 baseball season in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. This year’s 50-game calendar features 24 home games, all at Riverside Stadium.

The Jaguars season opener takes place Jan. 24, when the Jags host Wiley College in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

“This year’s schedule will be a good test of our players,” UHV Athletic Director Ashley Walyuchow said. “We have games scheduled against two teams ranked in the preseason NAIA poll, as well as last year’s Red River Athletic Conference Champion.”

The Jaguars will host No. 17 Texas Wesleyan on March 2.On April 8, the Jaguars will visit No. 15 LSU-Shreveport. RRAC champion Northwood University will visit UHV Jan. 30 and 31. The Jags will play five games at Northwood in March.

“We’ve made a conscious effort to improve the level of competition in 2009,” UHV head baseball coach Terry Puhl said.“This will certainly help us prepare for hosting a playoff tournament.”

UHV will host the inaugural Association of Independent Institutions (AII) Baseball Championship April 30 to May 3.According to Walyuchow, the tournament is essentially a conference championship for NAIA member universities that do not belong to a conference.

Walyuchow also noted some other games that should draw local interest, including three games against NCAA Division 2 powerhouse Texas A&M-Kingsville and Southwestern University (NCAA Division 3).

“Both of those programs have been successful in the NCAA,” Walyuchow said. “Plus, there are some local connections to both those schools: Many of their alumni live in the area, and Jason Gonzales, TAMUK head baseball coach, is a Cuero native.”

“Our schedule also should benefit local businesses,” Walyuchow said. “Teams from Texas, Louisiana, Wisconsin and Massachusetts will all visit Victoria and will spend money in our hotels and restaurants.

“This spring, the AII tournament will bring an additional 300 to 400 people to town during a five-day span.”

Baseball season tickets are on sale at the UHV athletic office, 3007 N. Ben Wilson in Room 122 of the University Center. Reserved seats are $200. General admission season tickets are $100.Passes for the AII baseball tournament are also on sale.Season ticket holders have right of first refusal, Walyuchow said.
