Jones returns from journey in Africa

UHV senior Karalyn Jones, center, takes a break with fellow workers and a smiling group of local children in Uganda, Africa, where she spent her summer helping in relief efforts.
University of Houston-Victoria senior Karalyn Jones has safely returned from her adventures in Africa.

The 22-year-old education major spent two months, and a little extra time, in Mbale, Uganda, doing relief work with Operations Crossroads Africa and spending time with local children.

"It's a bittersweet feeling to be back," Jones said. "I've never been happier to be an American than when I stepped off the plane at JFK Airport in New York, but even so, I miss the simplicity and purity of life in Uganda."

Jones returned to Victoria on Aug. 20 after six days of constant travel, including several unplanned delays.

"The No. 1 rule for Africa is that nothing is as you expect it to be," Jones said. "You have to have a high tolerance for the unexpected, but this is what makes Africa what it is. It's that untamed land that still captivates our imaginations."

While in Africa, Jones kept readers up-to-date with her adventures on her blog, Jones Journey. Readers can still catch up on her time in Africa and read her reflections after returning at www.uhv.edu/JonesJourney.

Now that she's back, Jones is interested in sharing her adventures with audiences, including civic clubs, church groups and school classrooms. To make arrangements to hear about her amazing journey, contact UHV Marketing at 361-570-4341 or news@uhv.edu.
