While workers struggle to rescue and care for victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi, the University of Houston-Victoria community has been presented with several local opportunities to assist in disaster relief efforts.
Making the Grade will be accepting school supplies and backpacks for students enrolling in VISD due to Hurricane Katrina. Donations may be delivered Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to Laurent Towers, Suite 290; the YMCA at 1806 N. Nimitz or Victoria Communications Services at 3202 N. Navarro. For more information, call 578-0270.
Clear Channel Radio, Victoria Television Group, Texas Roadhouse, Beacon Insurance, and Victoria Communications have agreed to be drop-off points for a drive sponsored by the Junior League of Victoria and the YMCA. Members of the Junior League of Victoria will pick items up from these locations once daily and will deliver them to the YMCA to be distributed.
This drive is strictly limited to the following items: toiletries (shampoo/conditioner, soap, disposable razors, shaving cream, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, etc.); towels; baby items (diapers, baby wipes, baby wash, baby shampoo, powder, bottles, etc.); and school supplies. Donations for this drive have been limited to these items only to respect the space of the generous local businesses that have agreed to serve as the drop-off points. Items can be dropped off at the above locations from September 2 to September 9 during their normal business hours.
Grace Lutheran Church will take items to Houston this week for the hurricane victims who are being housed at the Astrodome and will continue to take items for as long as they receive them. Items being accepted include clothes and shoes (all sizes); nonperishable food; personal hygiene items; diapers, baby wipes, baby food, ready-made formula and bottles; first-aid supplies; and bottled water. Grace Lutheran Church is located at 9806 NE Zac Lentz Parkway, on the Loop near Homewood and Citizens HealthPlex.
Victoria County Interfaith Disaster Response is accepting donations at First Victoria National Bank. These funds will be used for providing lodging and gift cards to Hurricane Katrina refugees who are in Victoria. For additional information, contact Gene Rice at (361) 573-9157 or (361) 574-9082.
