Olympic Medalists to Speak at UHV for Black History Month

As part of Black History Month celebrations at the University of Houston-Victoria Black History Month, Olympians Leroy Burrell and Michelle Finn-Burrell will be visiting campus on February 15 as special guest speakers. The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. Area high school coaches and their student-athletes have been specially invited to attend.

Married in 1994, the Burrells were both sprinters on the American track and field team that competed in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Each won the gold medal in their respective 400-meter relay events. This is the first time the couple will be speaking together at a public engagement.

A University of Houston alumnus, Burrell is currently the head coach of both the menís and womenís track and field teams at UH. He has been named the Conference USA Coach of the Year a combined 11 times in the last six years. Once considered the fastest man on earth, Burrell twice held the world record for the 100-meter dash.

The Burrells will be speaking in the Multi-Purpose Room at UHV. Light refreshments will be available prior to the event. For more information, contact the Office of Professional Development at UHV at (361) 570-4361.
