Texas teachers and area residents interested in increasing their knowledge about reading and literacy will be able to finish a master’s degree from the University of Houston-Victoria in only four semesters beginning in the fall.
Elementary and secondary teachers will be able to complete a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with a reading specialist certification and/or a master reading teacher certification in four instead of eight semesters because of a new intrasession model that will be used by the School of Education & Human Development for the degree.
A resident with a bachelor’s degree but no Texas teacher’s certification will take the same courses in four semesters but will graduate with a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in literacy (language arts).
Fry said the degree is helpful for people who aren’t teachers because knowledge about literacy applies to many different fields. For example, community college instructors, education program directors for nonprofit agencies and literacy consultants for publishers could use the degree to help with their jobs.
UHV started offering the Master of Education in curriculum and instruction with the certifications as an online degree last summer. It will continue to be offered online with the new intrasession model.
“We want to make our classes as convenient as possible to encourage students to complete their degrees and be ready to take the next step in their professional careers,” said John Stansell, dean of the School of Education & Human Development. “This new intrasession model is just another example of us listening to our students’ needs.”
