Face-to-face writing assistance comes to Sugar Land

SUGAR LAND Ė University of Houston-Victoria students in the Houston area have a new service available to them this semester: face-to-face writing assistance.

The service gives students in Sugar Land a chance to visit with a tutor and discuss writing issues in person, Academic Center Manager Sandra Heinold said.

Before this semester, online tutoring was the only option for University of Houston System-Sugar Land students to get help with their writing. Students sent their documents via e-mail to tutors, and tutors responded with comments within the students' documents.

The new service is a direct response to students' requests. "University of Houston System-Sugar Land Interim Director Susan Reynolds and Librarian Garry Church helped the Academic Center find space to set up operations," Heinold said. "All the pieces came together at the right time to help us bring this service to students in the Houston area."

Lauren Mitchell and Jennifer Mond are the first Academic Center peer writing tutors in Sugar Land. Both said the experience has been a rewarding one.

"Helping other UHV students become better writers has been very gratifying," said Mond, a UHV education major. "And since I plan to teach, working as a writing tutor is sort of like practice for my discipline."

Mitchell expressed similar sentiments.

"It's exciting to be one the first writing tutors in Sugar Land," said Mitchell, a UHV history major. "I've always been impressed with the writing assistance I've received from other Academic Center tutors, so Iím really honored to be a part of the team."

Students can make an appointment for a free tutoring session in Sugar Land by signing up in the library.

The writing tutoring adds one more area of assistance to the existing subject-area tutoring at the Sugar Land location. Daniel Luo, a second-semester tutor and a UHV computer science major, assists students in math and computer science.
