University of Houston-Victoria pitcher Brandon Castolenia fired his second no-hitter of the season to power the Jaguars to an 11-0 win over the UTB/TSC Scorpions and a sweep of their doubleheader Friday, February 15, at Scorpion Field.

In a wild first game that saw both teams score five runs in the last inning, the Jaguars outlasted the Scorpions, 12-9.

The two teams meet in another doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, at Scorpion Field. UHV, playing its first season of intercollegiate athletics as independent members of the NAIA, is now 8-1. The Scorpions are started the season with 11 straight losses.

As in the previous nine Scorpion losses, defense was a big factor in the doubleheader. UTB/TSC committed eight errors in the twinbill, five in the first game.

Jaguars 12, Scorpions 9 (first game)

UH-Victoria took advantage of Scorpion miscues to score two unearned runs in the first inning. Of the 12 Jaguar runs, eight were earned.

UH-Victoria led after five and one-half innings, 7-1, before the Scorpions scored thee times in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 7-4. The Jags scored five runs in the seventh to take a comfortable 12-4 lead that became uncomfortable in the Scorpion seventh.

Robbie Mang, Jacob Yousif, Brian Dombeck opened with singles, and Tyler O'Neal had a two-run double. After a walk to Ignacio Celedon, Schaune Collins had a two-run single to make it 12-8 and David Pittman reached on an error, making it 12-9. The Scorpions had the tying run at the plate, but the final two batters were retired to end the game.

Yousif had three hits for the Scorpions while O'Neal and Walter Blume had two each. Patrick Ford and Trey Capers had two hits each for UH-V.

Scorpion starter Julian Moya, who had allowed only four earned runs going into the seventh, was the losing pitcher.

Jaguars 11, Scorpions 0 (second game)

Castolenia hurled his second no-hitter, but first against an NAIA opponent. The lefthander struck out nine Scorpions and walked three.

Yousif, who walked and stole second in the seventh inning, was the only Scorpion to reach second base.

Errors hurt the Scorpions again. Only six of the 11 runs were earned. UH-Victoria had four runs in the second inning and seven in the third.

The Jaguars had 11 hits, three by Patrick Ford and two by Chris Joseph.

Kellen Berman, the last of four Scorpion pitchers, threw two innings of shutout baseball, striking out two without allowing a hit.
