UHV School of Business to offer new program: The Business of Medicine Certificate

The University of Houston-Victoria’s School of Business Administration will begin offering a 26-hour program designed to provide physicians with the business skills to master the financial, management and marketing challenges of modern healthcare practice without interfering with personal or professional commitments.

Entitled “The Business of Medicine,” the program consists of seven modules covering specific topics. Each module will be delivered face-to-face at the University of Houston System at Sugar Land on consecutive Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon beginning Jan. 26, 2008 and ending March 8.

The topics for each module are as follows:

  • Getting started or reassessing your practice
  • Risk management and professional responsibility and ethics
  • Financial management
  • Human resource management
  • Planning and Marketing
  • Health Information Management
  • Current state of physician practice management
Each module will be taught by instructors, specializing in the topic.

“We’re excited to begin a program like this in Sugar Land,” Charles Bullock said, UHV dean of the School of Business Administration. “By offering this type of certificate program, we’ve expanded our services to meet the educational needs of the Fort Bend medical community.”

Donna Poole, one of the 11 instructors for the program, commented on what this program can offer to the modern physician.

“It is my passion to make sure physicians have all the tools and knowledge available to make the best decisions on how to run a successful practice,” Poole said. “This course will provide them with business expertise not taught in medical school. It will also be valuable to anyone in charge of physician practice management.”

Poole, the vice president of Physician Development at OakBend Medical Center in Richmond, assisted in creating the curriculum for this program.

Continuing Medical Education credit will be given by OakBend Medical Center.

Registration for the program begins Nov. 19 and is due by Wednesday, Dec. 19. The program fee is $800 per person, due no later than Friday, Jan. 11, 2008.
