UHV to Offer Human Services Professionals Continuing Education

The University of Houston-Victoria will offer continuing education for human services professionals in the Alcorn Auditorium Oct 13 from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Cost is $69, and attendees will earn three continuing education credits.

Mary Mayorga, UHV assistant professor in the School of Education and Human Development, and Ann Wardle will present “Ethical Standards for the Counselor in the Professional Setting.”

According to Kori Wilson, UHV continuing education coordinator, this presentation will cover ethical codes, principals, virtues, dilemmas and legal responsibilities that are common in human services professions.

“There has recently been a request for the university to provide continuing education for licensed professional counselors, social workers, and psychologist in Victoria and the surrounding area,” Wilson said.

According to Mayorga, the licensed professionals targeted for this type of continuing education are professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, master social worker, clinical social worker and clinical psychologist.

Mayorga said the licensing board for each of these different professions requires a minimum number of continuing education hours each year to maintain a license.

Mayorga commented that finding workshops locally to fulfill requirements for continuing education is difficult and considers this opportunity very convenient. She added the only options have been home study courses or online courses.
