The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) recently received two grants totaling $51,000 from the Alcoa Foundation in support of community outreach endeavors at the university. This is the seventh year the foundation has given to UHV’s Letting Education Achieve Dreams (LEAD) initiative and the third year it has given to the Center for Nonprofit Leadership.
The annual Boys and Girls Academies, Math and Computer Science Awareness Day and ongoing mentoring programs will all benefit from the larger of the two grants. This award provides $46,000 to the Student Recruitment division and the LEAD initiative to coordinate these programs.
“Our goal is to create a stronger community by encouraging the educational, personal and social growth of students across the region,” said Laurel Cahill, communications/community affairs supervisor at Alcoa’s Point Comfort facility. “We believe the LEAD program is an ideal opportunity for young people to experience a college campus, discover their own potential and explore possibilities available through higher education."
The second Alcoa Foundation grant gives $5,000 to the Leadership Institute conducted by the UHV Center for Nonprofit Leadership. Designed to provide affordable, quality professional development for area individuals involved with nonprofit work, the institute is conducted as a series of workshops and seminars throughout the year.
“We are very grateful to the Alcoa Foundation for this generous gift,” said UHV President Tim Hudson. “Their continued support makes it possible for us to offer a wide variety of programs which connect community members with the resources of the university.” The foundation, which gave $17 million in grants worldwide last year, concentrates its grantmaking programs on areas such as the Costal Bend region, where Alcoa has a presence.
