UHV to host free ticket night at Victoria Generals game

The University of Houston-Victoria is celebrating the end of another successful school year by inviting area residents to Riverside Stadium June 10 for a free night of baseball, UHV giveaways and festivities.

UHV is giving away tickets to the Victoria Generals game against the East Texas Pump Jacks. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.

Fans attending the game will receive a UHV giveaway at the gate. Those who wear a UHV shirt will be entered to win special prizes during the game. jaX, UHV’s jaguar mascot, also will be greeting fans during the evening.

“Free Ticket Tuesday presented by UHV is a great chance for those of us who work at UHV to celebrate another successful school year with our friends in the Victoria community,” UHV Interim President Vic Morgan said. “I want to invite everyone to come out to watch a free ballgame and have some fun.”

Morgan will throw out the first pitch and welcome the community before the game starts.

“We’re excited to once again pair up with UHV to offer a free night for our fans,” said Mike Yokum, vice president and general manager of the Victoria Generals. “Both organizations want Victoria to thrive, and this is a way we can show our support.”

Although there are no UHV baseball players on the Generals’ roster this summer, there are two players with local ties. Miles Manning, a 2012 graduate of Victoria West High School who now attends McLennan Community College, is a middle infielder for the Generals. Manning was a standout baseball player at Victoria West High School.

Chris Jones, a left-handed freshman pitcher from the University of the Incarnate Word, was well known in the area at Hallettsville High School, where as a senior he helped lead the team to the 2013 2A State Championship. Jones finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record under head coach Shorty Cook, a former assistant coach for the Victoria Generals in 2011 and 2012. Jones is sitting out the first part of the Generals’ season with a shoulder injury.

Area residents can pick up free tickets to the June 10 game by visiting the kiosk on the first floor of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St., during normal business hours. Tickets also are available in downtown Victoria at the Convention and Visitors Bureau or the City of Victoria Public Information Office. Both are located at 702 N. Main St.
