“All the world’s a stage,” the old saying goes. And while that might be the case, one University of Houston-Victoria sophomore has taken that idea into the digital age.
Brittney Washington, a psychology major with a love of music, passes time between classes belting out tunes on YouTube, an online video site.
With a click of the mouse, her vocals make their way to the Internet.
“I don’t really know why I started doing it,” she said as she laughed. “But I grew up singing. It’s something I love.”
That love of all things melodic runs in the family. She looks up to artists such as Alicia Keys and Beyoncé, and even lettered in music during high school.
“My whole family is very musical,” she said. “Everybody plays an instrument, sings or something like that. Music is important to all of us.”
That isn’t her only passion, however.
As vice president of the Jaguar Anime and Gaming Club, historian of the Community Council and member of the UHV Student Government Association during her freshman year, Washington makes it a point to keep active in school.
“I’m a real people person,” she said. “I enjoy anything that can get me involved and around other people. I really just like being busy.”
The Houston-area native graduated from Richmond’s George Bush High School in 2012 before moving on to UHV. The university was close enough to home to offer a bit of security but far enough away that she has some independence.
“It’s been a good fit for me,” she said of college life. “I’ve met a lot of people and some amazing teachers who made sure we all really understood the material. It’s been an easy adjustment.”
She encouraged her fellow Jaguars to keep their eyes on the prize during school by staying out of trouble, avoiding drama and going to class.
“When you are in class, make sure you’re actually listening,” she said. “That’s important.”
Washington said she plans to work this summer before returning to UHV, where she will continue on toward her dream of becoming a psychiatrist.
With several years of school left, she admitted she has her work cut out for her. Still, she’s OK with that.
“I like what I’m doing,” she said. “I’m excited.”
