UHV Professor Emeritus John Cox Dies at 84

Dr. John Arlington “Doc” Cox, professor emeritus at the University of Houston-Victoria, passed away on Monday, January 22, at Homewood Estates. He was 84.

He served as coordinator of testing and professor of psychology at the University of Houston from 1966 to 1975, when he transferred to UHV, where he led the arts and sciences department until 1985. Prior to joining the University of Houston System, he held positions at Lackland Air Force Base, HUMRO and Trinity University-San Antonio.

“The UHV family is truly saddened by Dr. Cox’s passing,” said UHV President Tim Hudson. “His passion for science and for education is an inspiration for our community of learners, and his service to this university—especially during its formative years—is invaluable.”

Cox was born on April 26, 1922, in Ardmore, Okla., to the late John and Irene Cox. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from North Texas State University and a doctorate from the University of Texas. He published 70 research articles during his career and was a member of the American Psychological Association.

“I remember John most for being very, very dedicated to his students,” said Dr. Dan Jaeckle, professor of English at UHV. “He believed in psychology as a science, and he put forth great efforts to help students learn and succeed in their academic careers.”

Cox is survived by his wife, Joan Moore of Victoria; four daughters, Martha Sue and husband Timothy Callahan, Colleen and husband Mark Klingseisen, Nancy and husband Kenneth Case and Mary Lou and husband Bill Kilgore; one son, Kevin, and wife Susan Dorney; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 26, at Homewood Estates at 9606 NE Zac Lentz Parkway in Victoria. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends can make a donation to Accolade Hospice in Yoakum or to the University of Houston-Victoria.
