Success in the classroom is just important as success on the field for the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars softball team, and team members have succeeded in both fields.
The Jaguars were ranked No. 18 Wednesday in the 2010-11 National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NAIA All-Academic team rankings with a 3.333 team GPA.
UHV was the top Association of Independent Institutions Conference team in the rankings, which was led by Central Methodist with a 3.627 GPA. William Carey was at No. 2 with a 3.559 GPA, and McKendree was No. 3 with a 3.520 GPA.
“This is a great honor for the team as well as the school,” UHV softball coach Keri Lambeth said. “We expect a lot from our athletes both on the field and in the classroom, and they have been able to excel in both.”
Three members of last year’s team – Courtney Pettit, Emily Bergstrom and Bre’Neka O’Bryant – were also selected as 2011 Daktronics Scholar Athletes, with Bergstrom also being named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District first team. Bergstrom and O’Bryant are both back this year for the Jaguars.
“This emphasizes why our student-athletes are at UHV - to get their degree while continuing to play the sports they love,” UHV athletic director Ashley Walyuchow said. “This is a great honor that reflects their hard work.”
