UHV preliminary fall enrollment shows continued growth

The University of Houston-Victoria’s preliminary fall enrollment figures show a nearly 7 percent enrollment increase when compared to final figures from a year ago.

“Our dynamic growth just keeps on despite the nation’s economic challenges,” UHV President Philip Castille said. “Students are reacting favorably to our expanded university with our second class of freshmen, new degree programs and growing athletics program.”

Preliminary fall enrollment is 4,374, a 57 percent increase since fall of 2007.

Last fall was the first time underclassmen were able to take classes at UHV. Before that, the university offered classes for juniors, seniors and graduate students. UHV surpassed its goal of attracting its FIRST 200 underclassmen to the Victoria campus by registering 218 freshmen to take face-to-face classes in Victoria and an additional 101 sophomores to take either face-to-face classes locally, a combination of online and face-to-face classes, or only online classes but live in Victoria.

“Everyone at UHV has worked to make the university successful,” said Don Smith, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. “More students are hearing about the quality education they can get at UHV at an affordable price.”

UHV first exceeded the 3,000-student mark in the fall of 2008 when 3,174 students enrolled at the university and then reached another milestone a year ago when enrollment went over 4,000.

Final enrollment for fall 2010 was 4,095 students, up from the 3,655 students who attended UHV in fall 2009.

Enrollment in the fall of 2007 was 2,784. UHV opened in 1973 with about 100 students.

Final fall enrollment figures and a breakdown of student demographics will be released later in the semester after certification from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
