UHV softball players earn all-region honors


 

Three members of the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars softball team have earned recognition on the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA NAIA Southwest All-Region team.

Junior infielder Kelly King was selected to the first team at-large, while junior pitcher Emily Bergstrom was selected to the second team as designated player and senior first baseman Courtney Pettit was selected to the second team at-large.

 

The three were among the 32 players selected from the Southwest Region for the honor. In all, 160 student-athletes representing 65 institutions were chosen for either first or second team in each of the five National Fastpitch Coaches Association regions.

NFCA member coaches in each of the five regions select the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region teams and honorees are now eligible to be selected as either a first or second team All-American.

 

King (Delta, British Columbia, Canada) finished the season with a .361 batting average and had 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 27 RBI, 25 runs scored and a .511 slugging percentage.

 

Courtney Pettit

Bergstrom (El Campo) was the ace in the circle this season for the Jaguars compiling a 20-6 record with a 1.67 ERA. She was twice named the A.I.I. weekly female athlete of the week and was also named the NAIA Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 18. She threw UHV''s first perfect game that week in a win over Huston-Tillotson and finished with seven shutouts and 18 complete games this season.

 

Pettit (Deer Park) compiled a .372 batting average and led the team with 120 total bases, nine home runs, 20 doubles, 58 RBI and a .612 slugging percentage. She also scored 37 runs and banged out a team-high 73 hits.
