University of Houston-Victoria freshman Cory Carter might have kept his books, bed and belongings inside a dorm room at Jaguar Hall this past school year, but the pitching mound is where he really felt at home.
The Houston native got his start playing sports around age 5 and now pitches for the UHV men’s baseball team.
“I’ve loved baseball ever since I can remember,” Carter said, explaining he comes from a family of athletes.
The sport is actually what brought him to Victoria in the first place. Carter received an athletic scholarship and invitation to join the team his freshman year, and he found the school to be a good fit.
“It was a rocky start at first, just getting used to college classes, but I really liked it,” he said. “With the smaller student-teacher ratios and class sizes, I knew the kids in my class. And the teachers were more than willing to give extra assistance if you needed it.”
Life in the dorms was fun, too, he said. Whether he needed to borrow something or was simply bored and looking for someone to talk to, there were always people around.
“It was really convenient,” he said. “I loved it.”
Carter said his baseball schedule kept his calendars packed. Daily practices typically lasted from 2 to 5 p.m. The team played games on weekends and took road trips on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Time management was a challenge, but he learned to avoid procrastination.
“If you have work to do, get it done,” he said. “You can’t wait until the next night or after you’re done hanging out with friends. If you put it off, it will just add up.”
He might still be fairly new to UHV and the baseball team, but Carter said he has enjoyed the experience. His favorite memories so far include making it to the conference championship game and earning all-tournament honors.
Looking forward, Carter isn’t exactly sure what his future holds. He still has to decide on a major and, as for post graduation plans, there really aren’t any yet. One thing is certain, however. He said he plans to continue playing baseball.
“That’s something I don’t think I’ll ever stop,” he said. “Baseball will always be part of my life.”
