Longoria, Haymon earn top A.I.I. honors

THOMASVILLE, Ga. Ė University of Houston-Victoria junior John Longoria was named the Association of Independent Institutions Player of the Year on Tuesday and senior Broc Haymon was named A.I.I. Pitcher of the Year.

Longoria and Haymon were among six UHV players to be named to the A.I.I. All-Conference team prior to the A.I.I. conference Baseball Tournament which begins Wednesday.

Also honored were John Touchton, all-conference pitcher; Pete Ontiveros, all-conference relief pitcher; Austin Kent, all-conference first baseman and David Baker, all-conference designated hitter.

Longoria, who has played the outfield and first base for the Jaguars this season, has led UHV in nearly every offensive category this year. Going into the conference tournament he has a team-leading .376 batting average and a .659 slugging percentage.

He also leads the team with 49 RBIs, 112 total bases, four triples and 22 doubles, which is one shy of the all-time single-season UHV record of 23 held by Kent. He also is tied for second in home runs with six and is third in runs scored with 36 in 51 games.

Haymon has compiled a 7-3 record with a 4.77 ERA in 11 starts with four complete games. He has given up 42 runs on 66 hits and 17 walks, while he has a team-leading 88 strikeouts in 66 innings of work.

Touchton has compiled a 9-4 record in 13 starts with a single-season best six complete games and a 4.56 ERA. He has allowed 52 runs on 84 hits and 23 walks with 75 strikeouts in 77 innings.

Ontiveros set the new single-season appearance mark by a pitcher this season with 23 as he has compiled a 4-3 record with four saves and a 3.06 ERA. He has allowed 12 runs on 26 hits and 10 walks, while striking out 34 in 32.1 innings.

Kentís bat has been as hot as Longoriaís for most of the season as he has compiled a .368 batting average with a team-leading eight home runs and 42 runs scored in 46 games. He has a .619 slugging percentage and a team-leading .424 on-base percentage.

Baker has compiled a .259 average with a .497 slugging percentage in 46 games this season. He has 34 RBI, 19 runs, 15 doubles and six home runs.

The Jaguars begin defense of their back-to-back conference titles on Wednesday at 1 p.m. when they take on Talladega College.
