Itís been said that an organization is only as good as its leader. If thatís true, then UHV alumna Beth Dow is exemplary.
Under Dowís leadership, all the students at Travis Elementary School passed the TAKS test this past year. The school was the only one in the Lamar School District to earn the Exemplary School designation from the Texas Education Agency for 2005-06. Itís no surprise, then, that Dow was named Lamar CISDís Elementary Principal of the Year for 2005-06.
A Garwood native, Dow earned a bachelorís in elementary education from the University of Texas and a masterís degree from UHV. She has been with Lamar CISD for 26 years, starting as a teacher at Crockett Elementary School and later serving as a gifted-and-talented facilitator for grades K-8.
Dow was appointed principal at Travis Elementary School in December 1999, and since earning the impressive honor, she has started work as the principal at Velasquez Elementary, the newest elementary school in Lamar CISD.
Dow credits the success of her schools to the high standards to which she holds students and faculty. She believes that every student can learn, even if the rate of that learning varies, and that every teacher has a responsibility to do all they can to ensure each student succeeds. If test scores are any indication, Dowís high standards work.
