Free SBDC workshop to cover basics of business law

Hal Brown

Small business leaders in the Crossroads can receive two hours of business law training during a workshop on July 24 at the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center.

“Business Law Basics” will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the SBDC office, 3402 N. Ben Wilson St. The workshop is free and open to area business owners, managers, staff and board members.

Hal Brown, executive vice president of SCORE, will lead the workshop. A resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration, SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground.

Joe Humphreys

Brown is the co-founder, executive director and chief financial officer of Universal Nursing Services, a San Antonio home health care company. The company employs about 50 health care professionals and provides home health services to approximately 350 clients annually.

“As a successful small business owner and in his role as a business mentor, Mr. Brown has gained a great deal of knowledge and insight into business law,” SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “This will be a worthwhile workshop that will address some of the most frequent concerns and questions of small business owners.”

Topics covered during the workshop will include intellectual property, employee issues and real estate issues. Brown also will discuss different types of legal entities for businesses, such as corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies.

Farhang Niroomand

“Business law can sometimes be a frustrating hurdle for small business owners who don’t have legal training or background,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “This workshop will cover a lot of ground, from estate planning and asset accumulation to contracts and leases.”

The workshop was arranged by Annie Hudspeth, a lender relations specialist with the San Antonio Small Business Administration District Office and a frequent presenter at SBDC workshops.

The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster.
