Growing up, Alejandro Lima could probably offer up a tip or two about how to stay in shape – that is, if you could catch him long enough to ask.
Between football, basketball, soccer and baseball – and don’t forget track – the athlete was always on the go. And now as a freshman at the University of Houston-Victoria, he’s sharing his love of athletics with other students.
The 19-year-old Jaguar Hall resident assistant recently hosted his first event aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. He invited a representative from the YMCA of the Golden Crescent to speak to students about keeping healthy.
“I think people learned a lot,” he said. “She talked about fitness, staying in shape and just how to eat right. It was good advice, and I think we all learned a lot.”
Lima said he enjoys working as a resident assistant, scheduling and interacting with fellow residents. The urge to give back doesn’t end there, however. He also is a tutor at the YMCA.
“I like working with children. I always have,” said Lima, noting he works primarily with first- through fifth grades. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Lima was born and raised in Deer Park, a Houston suburb. He graduated in 2012 from Deer Park High School and selected UHV because of its affordability and small-town environment.
“It was time for me to step out of the big city,” he said. “Here, it’s a slower pace, and I have more time to pay attention to my classes. It’s great.”
Lima is considering entering into the physical therapy profession after college. He’s also contemplating joining the military.
“I’d like to join the Navy,” he said. “To me, it would be an honor to know I was serving my country. But it just depends. Only time will tell.”
In the meantime, Lima’s goal is to focus on his course work and after-school activities. He encourages other students to go after something they love.
“Just don’t lose hope. Keep your goals high,” he said. “If you work hard enough, you can achieve them.
