About 64 University of Houston-Victoria MBA students participated in the Spring 2010MBA Conference held at the University of Houston System at Sugar Land on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
The MBA Conference, which was held for the first time in December 2003, is the culmination of the MBA program. Students enrolled in the Seminar in Strategic Management, the capstone course of the program, attend the event, which includes a luncheon in their honor.
Central to the MBA Conference is the case competition, which provides MBA students with the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the MBA program to real-world business situations. Teams participating in the competition this semester prepared original business case analyses on Cisco. The teams are evaluated on several criteria, including organization, subject knowledge, quality and use of visual aids, audience interaction, elocution, and teamwork. Previous participants report that the case preparation and presentation experience and the chance to interact with faculty and fellow students make this event worthwhile.
Many UHV School of Business Administration faculty and MBA program alumni serve as panelists for the case competition. Because such a large proportion of UHV’s MBA enrollment is now online, students often work in virtual teams, and the MBA Conference represents their first opportunity to meet their classmates.
The winning MBA Conference team included Nehal Desai, Daniel Edwards, Hadi Elbanna, Asif Memon, and Ashraf Sherif.
This semester, the School of Business Administration tested a new method of assessment via a MBA Simulation, whereby students competed in an online industry analysis project simulation. The simulation spans a growth industry over an "8 year period" and students had to coordinate strategy and tactics across several areas of their company. The winning team for the MBA Simulation included Chinedu Ezenwukwa, Brandon Firor, Abiodun Isiaka, Anna Kallenberg, and Temitayo Ogundele.
Members of the winning teams receive individual certificates, and names of the members of the winning MBA Conference team will appear on a plaque to be hung in the UHV School of Business Administration. They will also be recognized by Farhang Niroomand, Dean of the School of Business Administration, at a breakfast celebrating their achievement. Members of all winning teams will be invited to serve as panelists at future case competitions.
