What is my Blackboard username?
If you are enrolled in a Blackboard course, students use their UHV Student IDs as
their usernames for the Blackboard system. For students, this is your logon identification
when you access your Blackboard course. Students can find their Blackboard username, by
referring to the
Blackboard Student IDs page.
UHV faculty, adjuncts, and staff log into Blackboard with their UHV domain information
(the same username and password used to log into their work computers, for example, doej as
the username for Jane Doe).
What is my Blackboard password?
All UHV Student ID and username accounts will be assigned an initial password. However, UHV students,
faculty, adjuncts, and staff will need to change the initial password to something more
secure before they log into any of the UHV systems, including the UHV Blackboard system.
The initial password is in the mmddyyx! format,
(see below), but this is not the password you use to log into Blackboard. You must change
the mmddyyx! password to something more secure before you can log into Blackboard.
- mm is your two-digit birth month
- dd is your two-digit birth day
- yy is your two-digit birth year
- x is the first character of your last name in lowercase-letter format
- ! (exclamation point - Shift + 1 on your keyboard)
- For example, if your birthdate is January 15, 1980, and your name is Jane Smith, then your initial password for Blackboard is 011580s!
If you've never changed your mmddyyx! password and you want to log into Blackboard, you'll need to visit the UHV Password Self Service site, select the Change Existing Password option, create a new password, use the Setup Password Recovery Questions option, wait 15 minutes, and log into Blackboard with your new password.
If you've already changed your mmddyyx! password, you'll log into Blackboard with your current password.
UHV system passwords (including Blackboard) expire every 90 calendar days. You can change your Blackboard password by visiting the UHV Password Self Service site and selecting the Change Existing Password option.
After changing or resetting your password, please wait approximately 15 minutes before logging into the Blackboard system with the new password information.
If you've changed your password via the UHV Password Self Service site, you must wait 24 hours before attempting to change your password again using the site.
Complete the steps outlined below to change your Blackboard password:
- Change Blackboard passwords from the UHV Password Self Service site. Select the Change Existing Password option. You'll be required to provide your UHV Student ID (UHV domain information for faculty, adjuncts, and UHV staff), existing password, and enter a new password. Please wait 15 minutes after changing or resetting your password before logging into the Blackboard system with the new password information.
- If you forgot your password but have already set up password recovery information for your UHV Student ID or username on the UHV Password Self Service site, you can use the Reset Forgotten Password option to reset your password and log into the UHV systems. Please wait 15 minutes after changing or resetting your password before logging into the Blackboard system with the new password information.
- If you forgot your password and have not set up your password recovery question for your UHV Student ID or username, you'll need to contact the UHV IT Help Desk. The Help Desk is located on the second floor of University Center on the UHV (Victoria) campus. If you are not on campus, you can Request Help via e-mail or call the Help Desk at 361-570-4399 or 1-877-970-4848, Ext. 4399.
UHV students, faculty, adjuncts, and staff who have not set up password recovery information for
their UHV Student ID or username on the the UHV Password Self Service site,
should create this information by visiting the site and selecting the Setup Password Recovery
Questions option so they can reset their password should they need to in the future.
How do I reset my password?
UHV students, faculty, adjuncts, and staff who have set up or created password recovery information,
can visit the UHV Password Self Service
site to reset their passwords for Blackboard. Select the Reset Forgotten Password
option and follow the online instructions. Please wait 15 minutes after changing or resetting your password before logging
into the Blackboard system with the new password information.
IMPORTANT: You must have already set up
or created password recovery information to use the Reset Forgotten Password
option. Otherwise, you'll need to contact the UHV IT Help Desk to have your password reset
(refer to the UHV IT Help Desk contact information provided above).
If you've never set up a password recovery question for your UHV Student ID or username, you can visit the UHV Password Self Service site and set up your recovery information. You select the Setup Password Recovery Questions option and log into the site using your UHV Student ID (UHV domain information for faculty, adjuncts, and UHV staff). You select two of the questions, enter the appropriate answers, and click Save. You are now able to reset your UHV password if you forget it later on. Please wait 15 minutes after changing or resetting your password before logging into the Blackboard system with the new password information.
Why doesn't my username or password work?
The problem may be one of several things. Please double-check this list and re-try your log in.
- UHV Student IDs, usernames, and passwords are case sensitive. UHV Student IDs should be seven digits long. UHV faculty, adjuncts, and staff should be using the same username they use to log into their work computers, for example, doej as the username for Jane Doe. If you have changed your password, make sure you are entering it with the proper case; for example, make sure the the CAPS Lock key isn't enabled.
- Your initial password follows the mmddyyx! format, where "mm," "dd," and "yy" represent your date of birth. The "x" represents the first letter of your last name, followed by an exclamation point (! - Shift + 1 on your keyboard). For example, if your birthday is July 04, 1970 and your name is John Smith, your initial password would be: 070470s! Do not type any spaces, dashes, or slashes. The "s" in this example should be entered in lowercase.
- If you are typing numbers, make sure that the Num Lock key is depressed on your keypad, or use the numbers above the letter keys on the keyboard.
- Make sure you are logging in to the UH-Victoria institution. The banner on the Log On page should depict the UH-Victoria logo. If you are trying to login on a page that has the red UH Main Campus logo, then you will get an "incorrect username" error. You should instead go to the Victoria institution log on page.
- Your course or your Blackboard account may not have been created yet. If you are attempting to login before the first class day, then it is most likely that your account is not yet active and thus not recognized by Blackboard. Also, if you registered on the first day of classes or later, then it may take 24-48 hours before your account is activated.
- Make sure you have followed the recommended steps in preparing your computer and browser. See the steps in the Computer Setup section.
- If you recently reset or changed your password, did you wait 15 minutes before attempting to log into the Blackboard system with the new password information?
