Java Setup:

Check Version of Java

For Windows users:

1. Go to Start + Settings + Control Panel (or Start + Control Panel for XP users).
2. Click on Add or Remove Programs (for XP, switch to Classic View first)
3. Look for J2SE or Java Runtime Environment in the alphabetized program list.
4. If the version listed is older than 1.6.0_13, uninstall it by clicking and selecting Remove. If there is more than one version listed, remove all but one supported version.

For Macintosh users

Click on the link provided below to confirm whether your Macintosh system already has Java installed on your machine. Follow the prompts that appear on your screen:

If you can see them, proceed to your browser settings.

If you do not already have Java installed on your Macintosh computer, download and install the Sun JVM from the link provided (below).

Download Supported version of Sun Java

To download Java from the Blackboard website, click here, scroll down on the Blackboard page to the Solutions to Common Browser Problems section, and select the Sun website hyperlink option. For step-by-step instructions, refer to the information below.

1. Latest Java Version!
2. Click on the Free Java Download button.
3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the download and install the Java software.
4. Don't install the Google Toolbar when prompted. Uncheck the free Google Toolbar option if prompted.

Disable auto update of Java

After installing this version of Java you will more than likely see the Java coffee cup update icon in your taskbar near your clock in the lower right hand corner:

Do not update!

Instead, right click on the coffee cup and then left click on the option called Open Control Panel.

A window similar to the one below should appear. Click on the Update tab at the top and then UNCHECK the Check for Updates Automatically so that it looks like it does in the picture.

The Java application may dispaly a warning message asking you to confirm your selection choice to Never Check for Updates (see below). Click the Never Check button to completely disable Java updates.

Click the Apply button.

Then close the window by click on the red X in the upper right hand corner.

The update icon should now be gone from the Taskbar at the bottom.

To clear Java Cache.
