Undergraduate Programs: Humanities – Creative Writing
This degree program is offered in Victoria and Online.
Creative writing is one of the fastest growing degree programs. According to the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, in 1975 the number of schools with creative writing degrees was 79; in 2009 that number was 822. This has resulted in a greater need for creative writing instructors at all educational levels. Students who enroll in undergraduate creative writing programs should be better prepared for graduate studies and for teaching positions. The degree could also apply to a number of other professions. As DW Fenza, the director of AWP claims, “many graduates of creative writing programs have enjoyed successful careers in advertising, public relations, journalism, publishing, arts administration, and technical writing.” Thus, a creative writing degree is an excellent choice for those interested in producing or promoting the literary arts.
Creative Writing will prepare students for careers in writing, publishing, and teaching.
Some of the courses may be used as electives for those with an English concentration. The creative writing courses may also appeal to education majors.
