Dr. Jeffrey Sartain presents "Long Live the Minimalisms: Unmasking Meaning in Contemporary Short-Story Fiction.” |
|
| "More authors than ever before are writing fiction that could be termed minimalist. This talk will frame contemporary minimalist short stories within the historic minimalist aesthetic of synecdoche, metaphor, metonymy, and parataxis. Contemporary minimalism prepares readers to navigate a world saturated with advertisements, Twitter feeds, and iconography as authors force readers to engage a text and unmask meaning. Minimalism is an appropriate aesthetic for our times as it caters to the modern lust for bite-sized storytelling while equipping readers to probe a postmodern landscape of infinitely extending surfaces." | |
