Aids for Written Documents
Our society is becoming distinctly more dependent
on visual images. This phenomenon has become particularly widespread
with the increasing popularity of T.V., video games and the
Internet. This visual epidemic has even made its way into academics.
A visual is no longer seen as a useless mass taking up space
on a school report: A visual can play a large part in enhancing
written communication by helping people to process information
that may be particularly difficult for them to comprehend linguistically.
This packet is an introduction to the various types of visuals that
are available for use in written documents. It offers information
to help you decide which type of visual is best for use in your paper.
However, this packet presents only an overview of each type of visual.
More specific detail on each type is available in our four category-specific
packets entitled “Using Visual Aids:
Tables,” “Using
Visual Aids: Charts,” “Using Visual Aids: Graphs” and “Using
Visual Aids: Illustrations and Photos.”
