  Visual Aids

This series of handouts contains introductory information about choosing visual aids as well as more advanced information about charts, graphs, illustrations and photographs, and tables. We recommend beginning with "Choosing Visual Aids for Written Documents."

These handouts were written with the "printed" or "hard copy" document in mind, although much of the information will apply to online documents.

Choosing Visual Aids for Written Documents This packet is an introduction to the various types of visuals that are available for use in written documents. It provides helpful information about reasons for presenting visuals and guidelines for presenting them. It also introduces different types of visuals, including tables, charts, graphs, and illustrations/photographs.

Using Visual Aids: Charts Charts are usually most helpful for illustrating a process both holistically and partially. This handout discusses Gantt charts, organizational charts, and flow charts.

Using Visual Aids: Graphs Graphs are most helpful for showing trends in data. This handout discusses line graphs, bar graphs, pie graphs, and pictographs.

Using Visual Aids: Illustrations and Photographs This handout discusses drawings and diagrams, maps, and photographs within your written documents.

Using Visual Aids: Tables Tables are particularly useful for displaying precise numerical data and presenting this summarized information in rows and columns. This handout discusses some general rules for using tables in written documents.
