This series of handouts contains introductory
information about choosing visual aids as well as more advanced
information about charts, graphs, illustrations and photographs,
and tables. We recommend beginning with "Choosing
Visual Aids for Written Documents."
These handouts were written with the
"printed" or "hard copy" document in mind,
although much of the information will apply to online documents.
Choosing
Visual Aids for Written Documents This packet is an introduction
to the various types of visuals that are available for use in written
documents. It provides helpful information about reasons for presenting
visuals and guidelines for presenting them. It also introduces
different types of visuals, including tables, charts, graphs, and
illustrations/photographs.
Using Visual
Aids: Charts Charts
are usually most helpful for illustrating a process both holistically
and partially. This handout discusses Gantt charts, organizational
charts, and flow charts.
Using Visual
Aids: Graphs Graphs are most helpful for showing trends
in data. This handout discusses line graphs, bar graphs, pie graphs,
and pictographs.
Using Visual
Aids: Illustrations and Photographs This handout discusses drawings
and diagrams, maps, and photographs within your written documents.
Using Visual
Aids: Tables Tables are particularly useful for displaying
precise numerical data and presenting this summarized information
in rows and columns. This handout discusses some general rules
for using tables in written documents.
