  Essay Exams

Essay assignments generally consist of written statements or questions that are designed to prompt students to make an argument that is supported with course materials, including lecture notes and texts.

Essays are given primarily as a means of evaluation. Instructors use essays to gauge students’ knowledge of course content and ability to explore presented materials critically.

Typically, essays take one of two forms: 1) prompts designed to be completed outside of class and turned in at a later date and 2) prompts designed to be completed within a limited amount of time during a specified class period. Whether you are writing the essay at home or in class, you will probably find the following guidelines helpful.
