Draft Your
ConclusionCall to Action
You may want to call your readers to action at the end
of your paper. Essentially, in a “call to action” conclusion,
you make a recommendation for your readers to do something or take
some kind of action after reading your paper. This conclusion may
be appropriate if your research has revealed that further research
should be completed, if you’re writing about topics that might
require some social or political action, or if you’re writing
a persuasive essay.
An example of a call to action follows:
As this report has shown, pollution is a cost of production, not
a moral evil. When we understand that we cannot outlaw pollution and
come to view pollution as merely a cost of human activity, we can
begin to devise creative environmental policies. This essay charges
that the public choice model can be used in environmental policy making.
From here, we challenge the Environment Oversight Committee to use
the choice model to reduce the negative effects of the externality
of pollution.
The call to action can be a very effective strategy for concluding
your paper because it can emphasize the importance of your paper.
In the conclusion above, the writer wishes to directly urge the Environment
Oversight Committee to consider using a model in their policy making.
However, your call to action may be to recommend further research
about your thesis. Remember, though, that you should be responsible
and reasonable in any call that you give to your reader.
