Student Services
The Academic Center, located in room 129 of University West, offers writing assistance, subject-area tutoring, testing services, instructional handouts (both in print and online), and a grammar tip of the week to UHV students.
Writing Assistance
The Academic Center has staff available to review student papers, faculty publications,
university documents, and other written work. During sessions with the tutors, individuals
may discuss a paper that is in progress. Tutors will offer a critical response to
a draft and make suggestions for revision. Students may have their papers reviewed
by Academic Center personnel in either a
face-to-face session or an online
session.
Subject-area Tutoring
The Academic Center provides subject area tutoring if requested by students and/or
faculty in areas such as biology, mathematics, psychology, and computer science.
During sessions with the tutors, individuals may discuss concerns related to courses
that are in progress.
Testing Services
The Center provides academic testing services. Students can schedule correspondence
exams throughout the year by contacting the Academic
Center Secretary. Faculty can also refer students to the
secretary for makeup exams, which are provided on an appointment basis
to students located at UHV. The Academic Center’s staff provides standardized
testing for students enrolling in college or completing their certification: The
THEA Quick Test (formerly Quick TASP) is offered prior to the beginning of each
regular semester, and the TExES test is provided on the four test administration
dates set by National Evaluation Systems. Students also can take practice TExES
exams through the Center.
Information Resources
The Academic Center provides a number of instructional handouts that may assist
you with both your academic and professional writing. The handouts are organized
into various groups or "centers," including
business and professional communication,
documentation style, grammar and
punctuation, English as a foreign language,
research paper, and
writing and learning across the curriculum.
Workshops and Presentations
The Academic Center may offer face-to-face workshops and presentations each semester.
Additionally, the center offers online workshops or presentations that can be worked
through or viewed at your convenience. These workshops or presentations may be web-based
or Power Point presentations. Power Point presentations may contain audio.
