Using Tense Shifts Effectively

Academic Center Exercises

 

We recommend you complete exercises 1 and 2 and either 3, 4,or 5. Of course, you may do all the exercises if you wish for a more complete practice.

 

Exercise 1: In exercise one, some of the sentences have unnecessary tense shifts. Your task will be to correct the sentences by crossing out the offending verb forms and replacing them with appropriate forms. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 2: Exercise two contains a brief paragraph about Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Your task will be to correct all the unnecessary tense shifts in the paragraph by crossing out the offending verb forms and replacing them with appropriate ones. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 3: Exercise three contains the first passage of a brief story about a young boy named Israel. In exercise three, you'll correct all the unnecessary tense shifts in the following paragraphs by crossing out the offending verb forms and replacing them with appropriate ones. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 4: Exercise four contains the second passage of a brief story about a young boy named Israel. In exercise four, you'll correct all the unnecessary tense shifts in the following paragraphs by crossing out the offending verb forms and replacing them with appropriate ones. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 5: Exercise five contains the final passage of the brief story about a young boy named Israel. In exercise five, you'll correct all the unnecessary tense shifts in the following paragraphs by crossing out the offending verb forms and replacing them with appropriate ones.
