  Comma Splices and Fused Sentences

Academic Center Exercises

We recommend that you complete exercise one or two and exercise 3. Of course, you may do all the exercises if you wish for a more complete practice.

Exercise 1: This exercise includes several sentences; each of the sentences is either a fused sentence or a comma splice. Your task is to correct each one by applying appropriate punctuation. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

Exercise 2: This exercise includes five sentences. Each of the sentences is either a fused sentence or a comma splice. In this exercise, you'll correct each one by adding a subordinate conjunction to the beginning of the clause that is less important in each sentence. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

Exercise 3: This exercise includes a paragraph that has been written without proper punctuation. In this exercise, you'll apply the appropriate punctuation making sure to avoid creating fused sentences or comma splices. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

UHV students can schedule a face-to-face tutoring session with a writing tutor or contact an online tutor to discuss any of these exercises or for additional assistance.
