Active and Passive Sentences

Academic Center Exercises

 

We recommend you complete exercises 1, 2, and 3 in that order and then choose one from exercises 4, 5, and 6. Of course, you may do all the exercises if you wish for a more complete practice.

 

Exercise 1: In exercise one, you'll make a list of when to use active versus passive sentences based on the information in the Active and Passive Sentences handout.

 

Exercise 2: Exercise two has two parts. In part one, you'll revise active sentences to make them passive. In part two, you'll revise passive sentences to make them active. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 3: In exercise three, you'll decide whether the sentence is active or passive. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 4: In exercise four, you'll identify passive sentences within a short passage and revise those sentences to the active voice. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 5: In exercise five, you'll identify passive sentences within a short passage and revise those sentences to the active voice. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.

 

Exercise 6: In exercise six, you'll identify passive sentences within a short passage and revise those sentences to the active voice. An answer key is included at the end of the exercise.
