Exercise 4: Writing with Prepositions
Part A: Writing with prepositional phrases.
Directions: Write sentences or one complete paragraph using the following
prepositions to make prepositional phrases. After you have written
your sentence, describe what relationship the preposition shows, for
example direction, location, time, or exclusion.
above, for, to, on, towards, under, in, since
Part B: Writing with Problem Pairs
Directions: Write sentences or one complete paragraph using the following
problem pairs. For each pair, make two different sentences using each
of the prepositions in its own sentence. After writing the two sentences
for each pair, explain why you chose the preposition that was used
in your sentence.
For example: With the problem pair off/of, you will write one sentence
using the preposition off and one sentence using the preposition of.
off/of, like/as, from/than, in/into, among/between
Part C: Writing with Idiomatic Prepositions
Directions: Write sentences or one complete paragraph using the following
idiomatic prepositions. Before writing the sentence, use the dictionary
to look up the word that accompanies the preposition. Write that
definition before you make your own sentence.
rely on, confide in, interfere with, contrast with, disappointed
at, buy from, familiar with, angry with, compensate for, borrow from,
careless about, according to
Once you have completed your paragraphs or stories,
schedule
