History
In the Fall of 1981, the chair of the Arts and Sciences Division outlined a facility that would improve the professional communication skills of students. In the Spring of 1982, several individuals studied the writing programs at other institutions and requested funding.
Finally, in January of 1983, the Professional and Technical Communication Center opened its doors. The center (with a staff of three) developed its resources and tutored COM 3330 students and others on professional communication.
Since then the center has expanded greatly. The center, now known as the Academic Center, averages about 3,000 writing tutorials per year. The Center has developed a library of books on writing and created a collection of worksheets and handouts on writing-related issues.
In addition to providing assistance with writing, the Academic Center has extended its services to the testing arena. The Center now proctors ExCET/TExES and practice ExCET/TExES tests, THEA Quick tests, correspondence exams, and make-up exams. The Center also offers self-paced test prep for GMAT, LSAT and GRE exams.
