The meeting was called to order by Miles Harrison, Vice- Chair, at 10:13 AM on January 14, 2010.
Miles motioned the December 2009 minutes be approved with no changes, and Yvonne Garcia seconded the motion.
There was no Cabinet Update from Lisa Barr; she was out sick.
University Update
Dr. Margaret Rice had a quick update about the University. She said enrollment looks strong for the spring semester, and thank you to all who are helping the students get into classes, and that recruitment efforts were going well as far as freshman and sophomores were concerned. She also mentioned that some things that were talked about at the 2006 President’s Cabinet Retreat were coming true for UHV including: athletics, a nursing program, growth in enrollment and programs, internationalization, and intra-session courses.
Guest Speakers
Wayne Beran, gave a presentation about the new UHV Jaguar Hall (housing for new freshman students) located on the Houston Highway (Highway 59) in Victoria. The new Hall will be open in time for the fall 2010 semester. The presentation was originally shown to the Board of Regents, and any questions about the new Jaguar Hall can be sent to beranw@uhv.edu
Old Business
Food Bank Drive – is January 19 – February 2. If you can volunteer to work at the truck on January 29, please sign up. There will also be a competition through UHV departments. There will be a “food” competition where each food item is worth 1 point and a “diaper” competition where each individual diaper will be worth 1 point. The winning department will receive a brick to be placed at the front of UHV and small party with the Staff Council Officers.
Work at Home Policy – LThere will be a USSEC meeting which will also talk about a “work at home” policy so that if an employee is hurt or unable to physically come to their UHV office to work, that they can do it from a remote location. Lawrence Nelson is head of that committee and will have more updates at a later date.
USSEC Meeting- Anna Celum stated that there will be a USSEC meeting this afternoon with a guest speaker from main campus to talk about their childcare center and what all is involved with getting a center started on the other UH System campuses. An update will be given at the next Staff Council Meeting.
