Dr. Margaret Rice, Chief of Staff, updated the members of staff council about recruiting efforts of freshman and sophomores. She also said UHV had new faculty (in particular, Macarena Hernandez) that are working to implement a new curriculum for high school students. Also, she noted that a group of jaguars is known as a jamboree
Robin Cadle, Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving, spoke of the All for One campaign that would start at the end of September, and said the University matches dollar for dollar every dollar contributed by employees to All for One. Employees can also decide which department or fund they would like their contribution to go to. For more information, you can contact Robin Cadle at CadleR@uhv.edu or 361-570-4120
Amy Mundy, Director of Annual Giving, spoke of a new campaign to raise money for UHV called “Campaign Victoria”. The media has been very helpful with getting the public service announcments ready. More information about Campaign Victoria can be found at www.campaignvictoria.com
University Charitable Project – Lisa stated that Staff Council would hold a food drive at the end of January, and make a donation at the beginning of February (January 25 – February 5, 2010). There are certain items they may need more of than others, so Lisa will get a list of those items. Lorraine will find out if Sugarland wants to participate with the UHV campus. If we want to do the Habitat for Humanity project, at least 5 people will need to commit to the project. Lisa asked that if anyone was interested, to please see her after the meeting or email her.
Work at Home Policy – Lawrence Nelson spoke that the research on the policy was going well and the committee’s next step was to meet with Laura Smith and other members of the UHV Human Resources department to get feedback specific to UHV.
Efficiency Project – Wayne Beran will give a presentation next month on this topic.
Suggestion Box - A committee has been formed to work on the Suggestion Box; modifying it to be more effective for faculty, staff and students. Staff felt like the suggestion box could be a better tool if there was a suggestion box and an internal bulletin board for staff, and maybe a separate bulletin board for students. Also, staff would still like to see it keep the option of listing your name, or keeping it anonymous when a suggestion is submitted.
Joe Ferguson from IT told the Cabinet members that a security system is being installed. Video monitoring is in progress, it is a state regulation, and 24 cameras are being installed between the two buildings, stores digital images for 1 month. Access control is coming soon for employees to swipe a card for access to a building during off-hours. Sugarland already has cameras installed on their campus and employees do have ID cards.
Convocation will be held on September 30, 2009 and due to growth in the number of employees, will be a little different this year; light snacks will be provided instead of a full meal.
Enrollment updates were provided by Lisa Barr. Enrollment has increased by 16.6% from FA08 and 48.6% since FA05.
A student housing location should be found and announced on November 1. A grand opening would be scheduled for some time in March 2010.
UHV Nursing program is now part of the Texas Medical Center which is a great recognition for the UHV School of Nursing.
SACS accreditation for UHV downward expansion was sent off August 31, 2009. Staff Council website is now updated, and information can be found at www.uhv.edu/staff_council
