Presidents Cabinet Update: Miles reported to the staff the different committees that are taking place, such as the House Appropriations Committee, President’s Cabinet, Presidential Search Advisory Committee, Master Planning Committee, and the Austerity Task Force. He gave a brief update on each. Due to our continued growth we will be asking for 2 more residence halls, and a new building. There could be a 15-18% cut, depending on what passes in the Texas legislature this session. There were 8 candidates selected for airport interviews next week. Then 3-5 will be selected for on campus interviews. We want to modernize our campus and provide central locations for student services, fitness, library, etc. Architects will be visiting the campus in the next few weeks. They added two new UHV library positions. Jaguar Hall renovations are continuing. The UHV Alumni Association provided all the TV’s that were installed. We will have a new dorm for fall 2012. MSN/MBA program was approved. There was an internal audit, and travel reimbursements need to be submitted within 60 days of travel. Verifications need to me done on a monthly basis. We should be rolling out with our new website design on August 15th.
University Update: Dr. Rice stated that we have 4,197 students enrolled and 34,865 semester credit hours. She reported that it has been a very successful freshmen/sophomore class. Many applications are coming in early for next year. Recruiters are doing a very good job. Applicants are coming in from all over the state of Texas. We are currently talking with different apartments in the area about additional housing for our incoming students. We are making plans to build additional housing as well. There will be a luncheon with past president, Dr. Karen Haynes. She encouraged everyone to sign up and attend.
Guest Speaker: Ash Walyuchow, Director of Athletics, came by to give us some current updates on the Athletic program. There are about 100 new student athletes with incorporating the new golf and soccer programs. They built a new soccer field on campus this year. About 200 people came out the first soccer home game. Soccer players were very pleased with the attendance and support. All staff, faculty and students get in free to all games. You can check the schedules out online at www.uhvjaguars.com. They also have an online store with lots of Jaguar gear, where you can buy stuff using your debit or credit card. Athletics is now located in Jaguar Hall. Their space is tight but they enjoy seeing the students on a daily basis. Baseball plays this Tuesday verses St. Mary’s. Softball plays this Saturday vs. Our Lady of Lake. Don’t forget to friend Athletics on Facebook at UHV Jaguars. They do occasional contests and give-a-ways. Ash is streaming live stats online, along with Twitter and Facebook. Student athletes are continuing to mentor students at VISD and Sure BET. Soccer players have also teamed up with the Challenger Soccer League this year.
Old Business: Emily Seale touched on the December Parking Donation Drive. We raised $133.00 for the Staff Council Unit Excellence Fund. The winners were John Stansell and Kristy Holly. Lawrence Nelson stated that we raised $355.00 for the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent with our Turkey Drive in November 2010.
New Business: Lawrence spoke about the upcoming Winter Food Drive. The dates for the food drive will be February 28, 2011-March 5, 2011. Miles Harrison explained the PIER notification process and asked if there were any problems with the recent use of it. There were some discussion about the other campuses in Sugar Land and Cinco Ranch. Miles will look further into the PIER notification and get back with us. Future USSEC meetings will be April 13th and July 13th. USSEC is striving to create the UH system as an “Employer of Choice.” They recommend that we share efficiency reports to ensure that we save staff jobs. There should be equal benefits across all campuses. UH Main is looking into “360” evaluations and utilize all points of contact to evaluate staff. We discussed Aparna Shrivastava’s conference travel reimbursement. Miles is going to research the reimbursement with Dr. Rice and get back with Aparna.
