Community Development

Mission Statement

The Regional Outreach Office of Community Development focuses on ways communities can overcome barriers to educational attainment. Currently, this unit is involved in the following activities related to its mission:

Research

The Community Development unit researches data bases to compile data related to the well-being of children in the UHV service region. In 2001, we published Children at the Crossroads, a report that covered many issues relating to children. This report can be used by different agencies and organizations to help them in planning and to provide data needed for grant requests. If you would like a copy of this report, please contact the Office of Regional Outreach at oro@uhv.edu. This publication is currently being updated and a second edition will be forthcoming in early 2004.

Presentations

The Community Development unit has produced a presentation entitled Community at the Crossroads that highlights the importance of encouraging youth in the Crossroads region to finish high school and enter some type of post-secondary education.  This presentation emphasizes the link between  an educated, well-trained workforce and the economic vitality of a region.  It also calls for a commitment of business people in the community to work together to help raise the educational attainment level of our region.

The Community at the Crossroads Presentation was shown to over 500 community leaders in the Victoria area and resulted in over 100 people making a commitment to be a part of a team to address and overcome barriers to educational attainment.  This project was recognized as a “best practice” by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating board in 2002.

If you are interested in having this presentation made to a group, please contact us at oro@uhv.edu.

Grant Support Services

The Community Development Unit currently provides grant and program evaluation services. We contract with grant programs to provide independent evaluation services that can include:

  • Developing measurement tools, such as surveys and questionnaires.

  • Evaluating progress and needs of programs

  • Developing evaluation plans

  • Providing final evaluation reports

  • Analyzing program outcomes

Evaluation services vary per individual contract.

Currently, the Community Development Unit provides grant and program evaluation services to:

  • Victoria Independent School District Even Start Grant

  • Cuero Independent School District Even Start Grant

  • Making the Grade

  • EPA Mobile Source Outreach Grant

For more information about our grant evaluation services, please contact us at oro@uhv.edu.

The Office of Community Development also provides a grant search service. For a minimal fee, we will search our foundation database and provide an organization with a list of foundations that are a good match for them for funding requests. If you would like to use this service, please contact us at oro@uhv.edu. We will need to know some specific information about your needs to be able to accurately match your needs to specific foundations.
