Early Intervention Program

The university has also been working on getting an early intervention process in place to identify and offer support to students who may be struggling with adapting to college life, especially during their first year. The process for faculty to refer students who are having academic difficulties is in place and has been tested, but the Retention Committee is working on a parallel process for staff outside the classroom to refer students who may be having difficulties. The twin goals for the Committee in this project are to be proactive in offering appropriate and personal support to students while at the same time protecting their privacy rights. UHV has historically enjoyed a strong sense of community, the kind of place where people know and care about each other and individuals are valued and supported. The Retention Committee wants to make sure that freshmen benefit from the kind of personal, individual support the university community offers them.
