Living and Learning

As part of a Living and Learning Community, each student takes a pair of linked courses and shares experiences in co-curricular activities related to their first-year experience.

Students will experience the following in their Living and Learning Communities:

  • Teamwork skills: Students practice effective communication skills, decision-making, problem solving, conflict management, and, of course, leadership in team activities and assignments.
  • Engagement: Students build relationships with each other, with faculty, and with the UHV and Victoria communities through meaningful and purposeful activities.
  • Retention: UHV provides resources and support for the retention of students through their sophomore year and beyond
  • Enhanced student learning outcomes – Faculty, Student Success Coaches, Student Life Advisors, and librarians work with each Living & Learning Community to help students achieve the learning outcomes in their linked courses.

Each Living and Learning Community includes:

  • a core curriculum course linked to a first-year seminar. Enrollment in the linked courses is limited to 25 students and the courses are scheduled in back-to-back time frames. Instructors work together to plan linked assignments and community engagement activities related to course content.
  • students in each set of linked courses live in close proximity to each other in Jaguar Village.
  • a support team consisting of two faculty members, a Student Success Coach, a Student Life Advisor, and a librarian helps the Living and Learning Community access academic and personal support resources across the university.

The Living and Learning Commons, a high-tech learning environment, is available in Jaguar Village for students engaged in academic and co-curricular activities.
