My name is Robert S. Cortez and I serve as the Senior Business & Community Recruitment Program Coordinator in the Letting Education Achieve Dreams (LEAD) office of the University of Houston Victoria service area. My role is to serve as a main contact point for potential students who may also be working full time and are seeking opportunities to return to the university.

I have earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona and completed Masters Degree studies in Management with an emphasis in Human Relations and Organizational Behavior. As an adult student myself and while holding full time employment, I gained personal experience with the everyday issues and stresses that confront students of all ages in their endeavors to achieve a higher education. This innovative program will give us the opportunity to work with local businesses to address some of the most important concerns in our region: trained labor shortages and educational attainment. Employers want their workforce to have reasoning power, problems solving, and interpersonal skills which commonly are developed with a college degree.

I am comfortable and confident that I will be able to resolve any question that may arise and help direct you to achieve your educational goals. Feel free to seek me out for any questions you may have.

How Can I Help You
LEAD provides a specialized student services designed to not only promote the importance of higher education, but also as a resource to the many questions that arise throughout the educational process. I visit with business entities in both governmental and private sectors, community and religious organizations to conduct presentations to working individuals who may be potential students about viable options to continue their education at UHV. Once contact has been made with a prospective student, I will monitor their progress and serve as a liaison between you and the university until registration and enrollment has been successfully completed. My involvement doesn’t stop there. I am available to assist in completing admittance applications and other required documents and set up appointments with counselors and degree plan advisors. I am also able to direct you through the financial aid process to ensure that you get access to all the monetary assistance available through LEAD and other resources.

Work with the Counselors
Using our improved transfer program, I will work to recruit students who have completed 30 credit hours at the community college and assist them to develop a plan to earn a bachelor’s degree or beyond. In collaboration with community college counselors and advisors, I will work to identify potential students who are ready to advance their education and who we feel they would benefit from our one- on- one approach. I am excited and looking forward to help make your transitioning experience from the community college to the university one that is pleasant and seamless.

Work with the Employers
In collaboration with employers, LEAD will work to recruit more adults by targeting this growing market of adult learners. Together with employers I will work to remove or at least lighten some of the most common factors that act as obstacles for older working adults, some of which are financial concerns, perceived lack of academic skills, and accessibility. With the aid of employers and their personnel I will explore avenues to establish funding or utilize available in house resources to help employees with the costs of tuition. To address perceived academic shortfalls the LEAD services will be made available to refer individuals to professional advisors either at the community college of university level for refresher courses if necessary. And with respect to getting access to the university I will work with community leaders and employers to arrange campus tours for prospective students to visit with the appropriate UHV personnel.
