Faculty has a professional responsibility for taking all reasonable measures to prevent academic dishonesty and for taking appropriate actions when it comes to their attention. Students also
have a responsibility to fulfill, and indeed an investment to protect, in helping to ensure that academic achievement is characterized by honesty and fair play.
EMERGENCY CLOSURE OR PARTIAL CLOSURE OF CAMPUS
Top of page
Emergency campus closure can occur as a result of severe weather, flooding, hurricane, fire, terroristic threats, chemical spills as well as other events. A decision to close the university or
cancel classes is made by the President or the President's designee. The decision to cancel classes or close a campus will be communicated as soon as possible, considering the circumstances
at hand. Decision choices will generally be reduced to one of three events:
Event 1 — Classes and Office Hours Continue as Usual. (This event is also operative in the early of evaluation stages of an emergency when no decision has been made.)
- Students should use discretion in determining when or if they can safely commute to and from campus.
- Students will not be penalized for discretionary absences.
- Student class time, assignments, and missed tests are to be made up as arranged between the instructor and students.
- Faculty who cancel classes at their discretion will attempt to inform students and the school secretary. The school secretary will keep Student Services informed of class cancellations to keep callers updated
Event 2 — Classes Have Been Canceled and All Offices Have Been Closed by Site (i.e. UHS Sugar Land, UHS Cinco Ranch, Northside Center or the UHV Campus only).
- Make up time and assignments may be required at the discretion of the instructor at the affected site.
Event 3 — All Classes Have Been Canceled and All Offices Have Been Closed at All Sites.
- Make up time and assignments may be required at the discretion of the instructor.
The campus switchboards will be updated as any new information is received. Off-campus operations will also be kept advised of the latest information. During emergencies, local television and
radio stations, the campus web site, and the campus switchboards are expected to be the primary source of information to students. Please stay tuned to your local television or radio station for
new information.
EMERGENCY MESSAGES TO STUDENTS
Top of page
Any call received by the university switchboard or any other department and identified as an emergency message for a student will be transferred directly to the Student Services Office in
Victoria, or the front desk at UHS Sugar Land and UHS Cinco Ranch.
Procedure
Students are notified of emergency messages that involve death, illness, injury or accident, or a threat to a student's livelihood or property. The Manager of Student Services or his/her designee
will determine if the situation qualifies as an emergency.
Transmitting Emergency Messages
All student emergency messages received by the Student Services Office (SSO) are handled as follows:
- The message, name and telephone number of the person calling is taken;
- SSO staff will check on the location of the student and then deliver the message if possible;
- SSO staff will telephone the caller if the message cannot be delivered or the student cannot be located.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION
Top of page
The safety of the students is a primary concern of UHV during times of emergencies. All students must evacuate immediately when the emergency alarm sounds. The key to successful evacuations is
knowledge of procedures. Evacuation routes showing the nearest exits are posted in every classroom and office suite in each building. Stay calm during an emergency. The last person to exit a room
should close the door after leaving the room. Students in wheel chairs should go to the nearest stairwell and wait for assistance. Never use the elevators during an emergency. Once out and away
from the building, do not leave the designated area until your instructor has accounted for you. Do not reenter the building unless the all clear is given by emergency personnel or university
officials.
FACILITIES USE AND SCHEDULING
Top of page
To schedule any activity other than classes and laboratories, a request for space allocation should be made to the responsible office
as shown in the UHV Policy H1, Facilities and Grounds Usage. The complete policy (Located at: http://www.uhv.edu/fin/policy/H/h-1.htm)
can be viewed online. Recognized student organizations wishing to reserve campus facilities should first submit a Building Use Form to the Student Services Office who will then schedule use of the
facility with the appropriate office.
