RDG 3310:

Early Literacy Development
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education.
A field-based course in the study of the wide range and variety of literature for the young child, both historical and contemporary; criteria for evaluation and selection; guidance of children's reading interest.
 

RDG 3320:

Foundations of Reading Theories and Assessment
Cr. 3. (2-1). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education
Study of the theoretical underpinnings for literacy acquisition and assessment as well as the systems of language and how they are interrelated and mutually supportive.
 

RDG 3321:

Foundations of Early Reading Theories and Assessment
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education
To study the theoretical underpinnings for early literacy acquisition and assessment as well as the systems of language and how they are interrelated and mutually supportive. This course is designed specifically for students who seek Early Childhood-Grade 4 teacher certification on a deficiency plan.

 

RDG 3330:

Using Literature With the Young Child
Cr. 3. (2-1).
A field-based course in the study of the wide range and variety of literature for the young child, both historical and contemporary; criteria for evaluation and selection; guidance of children’s reading interest. Formerly "Literature for the Young Child".
 

RDG 3331:

Literature for the Young Child
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education
Study of the wide range and variety of literature for the young child, both historical and contemporary; criteria for evaluation and selection; guidance of children’s reading interest. This course is designed specifically for students who seek Early Childhood-4th Grade teacher certification without the field-based component.
 

RDG 3340:

Using Literature with Adolescents
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education.
A field-based course in the study of the range of literature for adolescents; the impact of reader’s stance; criteria for evaluation and selection; the use of literature in content areas.
 

RDG 3350:

Methods and Materials: Teaching with Children's and Preadolescent Literature
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education.
Integrated use of children's and preadolescent literature to promote caring teaching skills while evaluating modern and classic texts to meet current curriculum standards.
 

RDG 3352:

Literacy Development in the Elementary School
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education.
Introduction of the standards presented in literacy theory courses through the design of effective literacy practices and exploration of literacy philosophies that represent subject mastery, caring and reflective teaching skills.
 

RDG 4360:

Components of Effective Reading Instruction
Cr. 3. (2-1). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education.
Application of instructional practice in the areas of oral language, phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, word study, spelling, fluency, comprehension, and written expression.
 

RDG 4361:

Reading and Writing Workshop
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education
A field-based course in the survey of goals, methods, and organization of literacy workshop programs and practices in the elementary and secondary schools.
 

RDG 4362:

Workshop Approach to Reading and Writing Instruction
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education.
A non-field-based course that addresses the goals, methods and organization of literacy workshop programs and practices.
 

RDG 4364:

Content Area Reading and Study Skills
Cr. 3. (3-0).Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program
A course for prospective secondary teachers covering reading, writing, and study skills for diverse classrooms. Includes unit preparation, theories and techniques of literacy, internet applications. Teacher certifications only. (Formerly C&I 4364)

RDG 4365:

Components of Effective Literacy Instruction
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education, C&I 3323, IDS 3323, and RDG 3310 or RDG 3352
Application of the standards presented in literacy theory courses through the design and implementation of effective literacy practices that represent subject mastery, caring and reflective teaching skills.

RDG 6310:

Using Multicultural Literature in Schools
Cr. 3. (3-0).
Evaluation and selection of children and adolescent multicultural fiction and noon-fiction literature, literacy approaches with an emphasis on comprehension and assessment of literacy development.
